True

The difference between being adored and being chosen.

Vera is fifty-four, eleven years into the wrong job, and holding a letter she wrote to herself back when she was still confident she’d make better choices than… this.

The novel

Something True

Vera has spent eleven years being good at work that was never quite hers, and a lifetime being the woman everyone counts on. She has gotten very good at being okay. She has a whole system.

Then the system starts to crack. A health scare she tells no one about. A neighborhood bookshop she keeps finding her way back to, and the bookseller behind the counter who notices the way she looks at things. A young colleague who studies her like she has it all figured out, and asks the questions Vera has spent years being careful not to answer. And, at the back of a closet, a letter she sealed decades ago, from the woman she meant to become.

As though being needed was the condition of my presence. As though I had made myself a resource rather than a person.
— Something True

Something True is a novel about second acts and the quiet reckonings of midlife: the friendships that hold when everything else gives way, and the particular courage it takes to stop performing “fine” and leave a life that is only almost right.

What people are saying

★★★★★

Could not put it down! I finished in two days and immediately ordered copies for my daughter and my granddaughter, whose mannerisms reminded me so much of Vera. Very well written with deep honest emotions and a blend of humor.

As a GenX woman, this is the type of story that I crave, relate to, and insist that everyone I know reads. My only wish is that Gina Cafasso creates a prequel and a sequel to this book.

I LOVED this book! It captured so much of the emotion of being a 50+ year old, single, educated, successful, professional woman. I can totally see this as a movie or limited series.

★★★★★

Men, if you’re curious about the female species read this book, it’s honest, raw and vulnerable…and probably the next Nora Ephron movie.

One of Gina’s gifts is her ability to really see people. If you’ve been feeling that desire for more authenticity in your own life, Something True is worth exploring.

★★★★☆

A beautifully introspective story about starting over when you thought your life was already decided. Vera is such a wonderfully layered protagonist—competent, funny, independent, and so used to being needed that she’s forgotten what it feels like to simply be herself.

The next book starts here

I have been, by every available measure, fine. I have been very good at being okay. I am writing the next one.

Vera finds a letter she wrote to herself when she was younger, and it undoes her. If the book turned something over in you, write to me. I read everything that comes in, and I answer.

Your address stays with me.

About

Gina Cafasso

I grew up in my parents' restaurant. They ran it for twenty-six years, and my father came here from Italy believing you feed people first and explain yourself later. I have always been an independent thinker. My parents embraced that, which was a gift, and one I have lived by to this day.

By trade I am a marketer, with fifteen years across life sciences, consumer goods, and hospitality. Something True is not about me, though people who know me keep insisting parts of it are.

I wrote it for women measuring themselves against a timeline nobody actually wrote down. That is not a failure. It is your life, and at some point you get to live it and start choosing what happens next.

I am at work on a second novel, a prequel to this one, and a book about my parents I have been circling for years.
