Vera has spent eleven years being good at work that was never quite hers, and a lifetime being the woman everyone counts on. She has gotten very good at being okay. She has a whole system.
Then the system starts to crack. A health scare she tells no one about. A neighborhood bookshop she keeps finding her way back to, and the bookseller behind the counter who notices the way she looks at things. A young colleague who studies her like she has it all figured out, and asks the questions Vera has spent years being careful not to answer. And, at the back of a closet, a letter she sealed decades ago, from the woman she meant to become.
As though being needed was the condition of my presence. As though I had made myself a resource rather than a person.
Something True is a novel about second acts and the quiet reckonings of midlife: the friendships that hold when everything else gives way, and the particular courage it takes to stop performing “fine” and leave a life that is only almost right.

About
Gina Cafasso
I grew up in my parents' restaurant. They ran it for twenty-six years, and my father came here from Italy believing you feed people first and explain yourself later. I have always been an independent thinker. My parents embraced that, which was a gift, and one I have lived by to this day.
By trade I am a marketer, with fifteen years across life sciences, consumer goods, and hospitality. Something True is not about me, though people who know me keep insisting parts of it are.
I wrote it for women measuring themselves against a timeline nobody actually wrote down. That is not a failure. It is your life, and at some point you get to live it and start choosing what happens next.
I am at work on a second novel, a prequel to this one, and a book about my parents I have been circling for years.
